How to Remove Herbicides
-- From Home Drinking Water Safely

Herbicides and
pesticides can safely and easily be removed from water at the home level or point of
use. Treatment facilities might not be able to protect us, be we can protect
ourselves. Here’s what you need to know about how to get safe drinking
water.
· Don’t Buy Bottled
Water
Many people buy bottled
water believing it is safer or better for their health.
While it is
true that bottled water might be a healthier choice than sodas or other bottled beverages, it is not a safer or
better choice than your own tap water.
In many cases, it is
exactly the same thing. There are no regulations saying that bottled must be better than tap. The only regulation says that
it must be “as good as” tap water.
Bottled water might actually
be worse, because of the chemicals used to make the plastic. Research has shown that the
chemicals seep into liquids stored in them.
Exposure to those chemicals is accompanied by the same health effects as those
that accompany exposure to herbicides; the ones you read about in my last
article.
· Don’t Use
Herbicides around Your House
Round-up is a popular
consumer product. The company has stated it is a “safe” weed killer. Research has shown that not
only the chemicals used to kill the weeds, but also the inactive ingredients are hazardous to our
health. If
you use herbicides around your house, you, your children and your pets are exposed to the health
hazards.
· Install a Good
Water Purifier
Regardless of whether you
own your home or rent, you can install a good tap water purifier on your kitchen sink. If you own your home, it may be
cheaper in the long run to install a whole house filter. The whole house systems last
longer and ensure you are protected from chlorine, herbicides and other chemicals that can get into your
bloodstream when you shower.
Another alternative is to
install a showerhead filter.
In homes with several bathrooms, it becomes less expensive to install a whole
house filter. It also ensures that you are not ingesting chemicals when you brush your teeth or get a
drink from the bathroom sink.
How to Compare Home Purifiers
As is the case with most
consumer products, some home purifiers are better than others. Not only in terms of
effectiveness, but also in terms of cost of use. The cheap purifiers found in
departments stores (PUR and Brita for example) cost a lot to use, because the filters are only good for about a
month.
In terms of effectiveness,
you can read the product performance data and look for specific herbicides and pesticides, such as those
mentioned in my last article.
The most effective purifiers on the market cost less than a dime per gallon to
use.
· Filter
Installation
Installation of the filters
for kitchen sinks and shower heads requires no expertise. Whole house filters must be
installed by a plumber.
· Be Safe From
Harmful Toxins
If you choose and install a
good home purifier, you and your family will be safe from herbicides and hundreds of other
toxins. You can drink your tap water with confidence
again.
