How to Remove Chlorine From Home Water Safely

Here you will learn how to remove chlorine from your home water safely and easily.  If you read my last article, you know why the chlorine chemical is there.  You learned that, except for cysts, illness-causing germs are killed by chlorination.  You also learned about the health risks of chlorine and chlorination byproducts.

The solution to these problems for homeowners is an effective home water purifier. But not all water filter systems can handle the job. There are a number of necessary steps and each must be included if you want to protect your health and the health of your family. Here are the necessary steps.

·        Granular Carbon

Granular carbon was discovered when chlorine gas was used as a chemical weapon.  The granules were placed in a mask to filter out the gas.  The same granules can be used to filter chlorine and many other chemicals out of tap water.  This also improves the taste and smell.

Although chlorine is the chemical we know the most about, thousands of other cancer-causing chemicals have been found in publicly treated supplies. A purifier’s “product performance data” should list the chemicals and the effectiveness of the product.

·        Solid Carbon Block

Although granular carbon can do a lot of work, it is possible for water to stream around the granules. When that happens, some chlorine will remain in the water. The solution that some manufacturer’s have come up with is to use granular carbon as the first step and then run the water through a tiny channel, no larger than a micron, in a solid carbon block to remove the rest of the chemicals that may endanger your family's safety.

·        Other Benefits of Sub-Micron Filtration

The sub-micron sized channel in the solid carbon block will effectively remove illness-causing cysts.  The EPA has warned the public that cysts may be present in any water supply at any time.  The infection caused by cysts is similar to food poisoning.  Although most people recover, those who are sick, elderly or very young could die from the infection.  The EPA advises at risk individuals to invest in sub-micron filtration for their homes.  Otherwise, they need to boil all of the water they use for drinking, brushing their teeth and for washing fresh fruits or vegetables.

Sub-micron filtration will also remove any fine particles that may be present in the your home water.  This is sometimes referred to as reduced turbidity.

·        Other Filtering Media

Other filtering media are necessary to remove the disinfection byproducts.  In order to be sure that a purifier removes the byproducts, check the product performance data for THMs or trihalomethanes.  Some of the better drinking water and showerhead filters contain the necessary media to remove THMs and the threat of cancer accompanied by exposure to them.

·        Ion Exchange

An ion exchange step is necessary to provide protection from heavy metals like lead.  Any metallic particles are exchanged for electrolytes, primarily sodium and potassium.  This further improves the taste of the water, making it similar to what you would get from a mountain spring.

Those are all the steps you need to protect your health and the health of your family from chlorine and other contaminants. You can find all of those steps in a single, inexpensive family household water treatment filter system.

But not all water filters, home water purifiers nor water filtration systems are equal. Get the safest and most effective home water treatment system at a very affordable investment…
