How to Remove
Carcinogens
From Tap Drinking
Water
In my last article, you learned about the causes of hexavalent
chromium in
drinking water. The individual cannot address all of the causes. Government
regulations help only to a certain extent.
The solution that homeowners need right now has
to do with removing the chromium and other cancer-causing chemicals from the waters that come into their homes in
order to protect their families health. The solution is a home purifier, but not all purifiers are
effective.
For thousands of years, people have known how to purify by
boiling. Boiling removes illness-causing pathogens, but as you learned in my last article, it actually releases
carcinogens into the air.
Distillation devices have been used for ages to improve water’s
purity. Distillation devices can remove minerals. So, they might be somewhat effective against naturally occurring
chromium deposits, but not the chromium-based chemicals released by industrial
activity.
Reverse osmosis purifiers are available for home and industrial
use. Although they are preferred for industrial applications, they are not the right choice for homeowners, because
they will not remove carcinogens from water.
Reverse osmosis is effective against minerals and some other
naturally occurring contaminants. For example, the systems will remove illness-causing cysts from natural sources.
Reverse osmosis cannot be used for disinfection purposes and the systems are ineffective against
chemicals.
Granular activated carbon filters are the most effective
“single” solution available for chemical contaminants. Granular carbon in combination with a solid carbon block, a
“two-step” solution, is most effective against chemicals. Chemicals can be reduced by 99.99% or
more.
Granular activated carbon or GAC can be used against hexavalent
chromium in drinking water, as long as the homeowner is careful to replace the filters on a regular basis. GAC has
a limited capacity for contaminant reduction. It works by trapping chemicals on the surface of the granule. The
granules surface is limited. So, the filters must be replaced.
The most effective purifiers on the market today contain
additional steps to address all of the most common contaminants. Other than chemicals, the most common contaminants
are lead and parasitic cysts.
Lead consumption is not associated with an increased risk of
cancer, but it is associated with an increased risk of learning disabilities. Consuming small amounts of lead on a
regular basis throughout a person’s life is associated with an increased risk of high blood pressure and heart
disease in the elderly. In cities where lead is known to be a problem, researchers have found that the risk of high
blood pressure and heart disease is higher.
Along with GAC to remove carcinogens from water, a purifier
should have an ion exchange step to remove lead. To remove cysts, a submicron particle filter is
necessary.
Since exposure to cancer-causing chemicals is not limited solely
to consumption, it is important to install a showerhead purifier. Most showerhead filters are ineffective against
the THMs you learned about in my previous article. You will need to read the product performance data in order to
determine if the filter you are about to choose will remove THMs.
The solution to hexavalent chromium in drinking water is
